Patterson High’s varsity wrestlers went away with a 54-16 win Tuesday, Nov. 27, as the Tigers hosted an undermanned Modesto Christian High team.

Modesto Christian eventually was done in by several forfeits and a tough group of Patterson grapplers. The disparity between the teams’ benches all but guaranteed a Tigers victory.

Patterson senior wrestler Joey Howard, who earned a pin against his Crusaders’ opponent in the 145-pound weight class, said his team is obligated to remain focused regardless of who is on the mat.

“What we do inside the practice room will push each of us towards our goals,” Howard said. “Everyone attends practice and works hard. We all want to do good this season and compete for a Western Athletic Conference championship.”

No match personified that attitude more than the one between junior Jordan Canseco and his opponent from Modesto Christian, Christian Applegate.

The pair of 120-pounders started off Monday’s dual meet with aggressive attacks on their feet and fierce grappling on the mat in a match that eventually culminated in a 19-6 decision for Canseco.

Solid performances were turned in by Tiger newcomers Austin Lewis (152 pounds) and Steven Pham (heavyweight).

Lewis, a sophomore, won a 12-5 decision over Modesto Christian’s Matt Harper, while Pham, a sophomore, scored a pin in the opening ticks of the first period over Crusader Ilisaha Juvera.

The Tigers effectively began the dual meet ahead 36-0 before any grappling took place.

Forfeit victories at 106 pounds, 113 pounds, 126 pounds, 138 pounds, 160 pounds and 170 pounds upped Patterson’s lopsided advantage.

“We have another young team — we’re still young from last season,” Howard said. “But we also have some experienced guys. Those are the guys that need to prepare the new wrestlers for what’s ahead, and who emphasize hard work and getting better.”

The Tigers next participate at the Dos Palos High Tournament Friday and Saturday at Dos Palos High. Friday’s tournament action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
