The campaign aims to encourage West Side residents to make healthy choices and to improve medical services for the 44,000 people who live between Vernalis to Gustine.
District 5 Supervisor Jim De Martini presented grand-prize essay winner Luz Mendez, a seventh-grader from Walnut Grove Elementary School, with an iPod Touch on Monday, Dec. 10, Patterson Joint Unified School Board meeting. She used the theme “Exercise for the Health of It.!” DeMartini and representatives of the Westside Healthy Choices Task Force also presented the awards during a morning assembly at Sacred Catholic Heart School in Patterson in the morning and at the Newman-Crows Landing School Board meeting that evening on Monday, Dec. 10.
Other local essay winners include Sacred Heart Catholic School seventh-graders Anwar Mustafa, first place and received a $100 gift card, Savannah DeHoyos, second place and received a $50 gift card and Michelle Nunez, third place and was awarded a $25 gift card.
West Side winners for the art contest by grade level are:
•Kindergarten and first-graders: Chavelle Bettencourt, Barrington Elementary School in Newman, first place; Liam Callahan, Sacred Heart in Patterson, second place and Aylen Gonzalez, Hunt Elementary School in Newman, third place
•Second- through fourth-graders: Daniel Gomes Jr., Barrington Elementary in Newman, Charilze Price, second place and Alison Frunz, third place. Both are from Sacred Heart in Patterson.
•Fifth-and sixth-graders: Michaela Friedrich, from Sacred Heart, first place, Corina Chico from Von Renner in Newman, second place and Daniel Maring from Sacred Heart, third place.
•Seventh-and eighth-graders: Suzanne Crockett, from Sacred Heart School, first place, Jared Michelena from Sacred Heart School, second place and Adam Godinez of Walnut Grove in Patterson third place. All art winners received $50 gift cards.
