Patterson girls open with two wins at Tracy tourney

Patterson High's varsity girls basketball team won its first two games of the Tom Hawkins-Tracy Breakfast Lions Girls Basketball Tournament with a 67-48 victory against Turlock High on Wednesday, Dec. 26 and a 51-28 thrashing of Lathrop High on Thursday, Dec. 27.

With the two wins, Patterson (10-1) extended its winning streak to nine games.

On Wednesday, junior Jovanah Arrington had 19 points to lead the Tigers over Turlock.

Patterson's other leading scorers for the night were sophomore Shealyn Craven, who tallied 15 points, and junior Mele Tupouata, who added 14.

Against Lathrop, Arrington (four rebounds, four assists) scored six of her team-high 10 points in the first quarter, boosting her squad to a 16-5 lead after eight minutes of play.

Lathrop scored the first four points of the second period before Patterson again turned up the offense.

The Tigers outscored Lathrop 16-6 in the second quarter and closed the first half with a 16-2 run that rolled over into a commanding third period.

Freshman Danielle Jenkins (six points, 10 rebounds) and Craven (nine points) each scored four points in the third to help Patterson take a 44-17 edge into the final quarter of play.

Tupouata finished with six points and 10 rebounds, while fellow junior Dayna Hansen contributed eight points and five boards. Senior Shantel Perez posted four points and four rebounds for Patterson.

The Tigers will continue the tournament Friday, Dec. 28 as they face Gregori High of Modesto at 6 p.m. The game will be played at Tracy High School.
