"We were down 13-0 before scoring our first points," said Patterson coach Agustin Arreola. "But once we made a few adjustments, including making a concerted effort to get the ball into the post, we took control of the game. Our ability to pressure (Central Valley's) guards and take advantage of mismatches proved to be the difference in the game."
Junior Jordan Levu led the Tigers in scoring as he put up 15 points, adding 16 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Teammate senior Skylar Job put up 14, including three 3-pointers, while grabbing seven rebounds.
"Aside from the disappointing start, we were satisfied with our performance," Arreola said. "Our players were able to make the necessary adjustments during the game, especially on the offensive end where they got (Job) and (Levu) involved."
The coach called the win a learning experience that should help the Tigers (12-4 overall, 1-0 WAC) in future games.
"Our players understand that we alone control our own destiny. We understand that it might take 11 to 12 victories in WAC to win league," Arreola said. "Wednesday night was the first step. We learn from our mistakes and build on our strengths as we prepare for a much improved Livingston."
Patterson will continue the league season at home at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, against the Livingston High Wolves.
Freshmen
Avery Lahoyes led all scorers with 19 points as the freshman Tigers pulled out a 57-48 win over Central Valley in the league opener for both teams.
Michael Lawson scored 14 points for the Tigers, while teammate Richard Ricks tallied 11. Adam Hansen had a team-high 11 rebounds for Patterson.
