Central Catholic High of Modesto claimed more wins from forfeits than from pins Jan. 16 as Patterson High’s varsity wrestlers showed glimpses of their potential in a 46-25 Western Athletic Conference defeat at home.

“I see these kids continuing to do things right, and moving in the right direction,” said Juan Gonzalez, Patterson assistant coach. “I’m pleased with the toughness and heart that our kids showed out there.”

Injuries, coupled with inexperience, forced the Tigers (1-4 WAC) to forfeit five of the 14 matches in their loss to rival Central Catholic.

The Raiders won two matches by pin, one by decision, and five by forfeit, while Patterson won two by pin and four by decision.

Patterson showed off some strong wrestling, however. Junior Manuel Cruz (132 pounds) and sophomore Francisco Plascencia (195) turned in a pair of pins, and the Tigers won six of the nine matches decided on the mat.

Cruz looked sharp, getting right to business in his match with instant aggression. Central Catholic’s Enzo Gomez was on the mat in less than 10 seconds. After Cruz took a 7-0 lead, the bout ended 59 seconds into the second round.

Plascencia took a little longer to land his pin, which he did with 38 seconds remaining in the second, but he put forth the effort his coaches wanted to see against Central Catholic’s Zack Ringer.

“We are seeing him start to develop,” Gonzalez said. “He may not be the strongest guy and he may not be the most technical, but he will always give his best effort in every match.”

Patterson senior Joseph Ruelas (138) stunned Central Catholic’s Timmy Gutierrez with an escape late in the third round and finished him off 6-4 in overtime.

“Without those forfeits, I feel that we would have won the dual meet,” Ruelas said. “This group is getting better every day.”

Patterson freshman Sean DeOcampo (106) earned a 10-1 decision over Central Catholic’s Jared Nicholson.

Sophomore Daniel Cota defeated Roman Dias of Central Catholic 2-0 in the 126-pound match, and senior Joey Howard (145) scored a 6-5 decision against Devon Kelly.

“There is a lot of raw talent and hard workers on this team,” Gonzalez said. “We’re not really looking at wins and losses at this point of the season. We’re looking to see improvement and teamwork.”

The season continues at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, as Patterson travels to Turlock for the Rumble in the Jungle Tournament at Pitman High.

Junior varsity

Patterson’s JV wrestlers went away with a 60-15 win Jan. 16 as the Tigers (5-0 WAC) played host to an undermanned Central Catholic team.

The Raiders were done in by nine forfeits out of 14 weight classes, and a tough effort by Patterson senior grappler Brad Gill.

The disparity between the teams’ benches guaranteed a Tigers victory.

Patterson won one match by pin and nine by forfeit, while the Raiders won one by pin and one by decision. Both teams forfeited the 126 and 285 pound weight classes

Gill earned a pin against his Raiders’ opponent in the 170-pound weight class.
