WHAT: Love Patterson volunteer day
WHEN: 9 a.m. to noon April 27
WHERE: Meet at Hammon Senior Center, 1033 W. Las Palmas Ave., and form groups to participate in projects in various areas of town.
People show love in many ways — sometimes by sending a card or giving candy or flowers, and sometimes by rolling up their sleeves and getting to work.
Organizers are encouraging Patterson residents to show their love for their city on Valentine’s Day by registering for a Love Patterson volunteer day in April.
Participants will meet at Hammon Senior Center on April 27, a Saturday, and form groups to tackle needs throughout the community.
The organizer, Brenda Moren of Family Christian Center, invites residents to join the effort, which is scheduled the same day as Patterson’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life walkathon.
“We encourage people to participate in Love Patterson and to walk in the Relay For Life, as well,” Moren said. “I think that having the relay will add to Love Patterson, as everyone will be outside and want to participate.”
Volunteers will help at the Westside Animals for Adoption at the Best Friends Pet Resort in rural Patterson, clean up a homeless shelter that is being developed by Helping Others Sleep Tonight, and provide supplies for the Hammon Senior Center.
Other tentative projects include serving lunch to needy residents in the city’s North Park, delivering cookies to members of the fire and police departments, collecting electronic waste materials and participating in the Relay For Life.
People of all ages are invited to sign up and pitch in.
“We are open to suggestions on things needed in community.” Moren said.
She explained that the day is patterned on Love Modesto, an event started by Big Valley Grace Community Church in Modesto.
After two years of planning, more than 1,000 people showed up to the first Love Modesto day in March 2009 to clean up neighborhoods, visit people in convalescent homes, serve lunch and play games in city parks.
Since then, 27,000 people have participated in nine additional events, and other cities in Stanislaus County have begun similar efforts.
