The 39th annual Apricot Fiesta is seven months away — May 29 to 31 — but officers and board members have already begun preparing letters for the annual membership drive that kicks off next week.

The fiesta committee is seeking donations for the event, which includes the popular Miss Patterson and Little Mr. and Miss Apricot contests, the Saturday morning parade and Saturday night fireworks show.

“It is an annual event,” fiesta secretary Marilyn Hoobler said of the membership drive. “Our membership drive is something that has been in existence nearly as long as the Fiesta itself. By becoming a member, you are showing your support and enthusiasm for the continuation of the fiesta.”

Membership letters will be sent through the mail next week asking for members and donations for the annual event, which also features a Lions Club chicken barbecue, games and rides for children, numerous food booths in the South Park and craft and commercial booths that line the downtown streets.

Membership categories are $10 individual, $25 family and $10 seniors. The fiesta is also offering a special “Platinum Fireworks” membership of $39, and those in this category will receive a special Apricot Fiesta gift.

All levels of membership will get a special decal in addition to a 2009 Apricot Fiesta schedule mailed in the spring.

But Hoobler said volunteers are needed as much as money, a sentiment echoed by fiesta president Jeff Essex in the membership letter.

“In order to make our 39th Apricot Fiesta a reality, we need the continuing support of the community in the form of volunteers, membership fees and general donations,” Essex wrote. “By doing so, you will be helping promote apricots as well as the community of Patterson.”
