A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 26, for Thomas C. Vargas of Newman, who died Wednesday, Feb. 20, at his residence.
Mr. Vargas, 72, was born in LaSelva Beach-Santa Cruz and was a lifetime resident of Newman. He worked for Patchett’s and M&M Chevrolet in Newman as a paint and body repairman for 35 years. He was a parishioner of St Joachim’s Catholic Church in Newman and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Newman Moose Lodge and former member of the Westside Auto Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and restoring antique cars.
Mr. Vargas is survived by his wife, LaVerne Vargas of Newman; sons, Matthew Vargas of Newman and John Vargas of Fresno; daughters, Jolene Saldivar of Patterson and Dianne Harris of Turlock; sisters, Dorothy Vargas of Newman, Joyce Ananos of Pleasant Hill, Jeanette Pires of Hilmar and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Daniel Vargas and Richard Vargas and a granddaughter.
A visitation will be observed from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25, followed by a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel in Newman. A second visitation will be observed from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Hillview Funeral Chapel followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Newman. Burial will follow at Hills Ferry Cemetery.
