Patterson coach Cade Tomasegovich said the team could find defending its Western Athletic Conference title tougher than expected.
“There was a general lack of intensity (from the players),” he said. “It being the first match, I will cut them a little slack — but not after this.”
Downey took advantage of Patterson’s inexperience at the goalkeeper position, the coach said.
“The game was really more even than the score indicates — Downey scored on breakaways,” Tomasegovich said. “Our lack of a goalie was the main factor. The girls that played there did fine, but they aren’t goalies.”
Seniors Chanda Noynola and Cristina Tinoco played goalkeeper during the match.
