A Patterson High School junior, Josh Porras, received the grand prize Saturday, March 9, during Patterson Education Foundation’s “Patterson’s Got Talent” event, which highlighted the abilities of community members of various ages.

More than 125 audience members filled the Apricot Valley Elementary School multipurpose room to see 14 acts featured in the finals.

Porras received a plaque for his performance of an original song, “See You On Sunday,” which he sang and played on guitar.

Foundation chairwoman Nancy Anders said she was thrilled with the show — the foundation’s first — which included singers and a dance group.

“It as just wonderful, “Anders said. “We have outstanding talent here in Patterson.”

The money raised by the show will provide grants for teachers within Patterson Joint Unified School District, which will be awarded at the annual Student Art Show on May 14 at Walnut Grove School.

Grants will be awarded in four categories: performing arts, music, math and science.

The education foundation chooses new areas to donate to each year, and future donations will be support technology in the classroom and repairs to the high school auditorium.

Foundation member Richard Ricks was master of ceremonies for the evening. Judges were district Superintendent Phil Alfano, Mayor Luis Molina, local volunteer Juanzette Hunter and Sherri Fowler, a foundation member who retired from teaching in the Fremont School District.
