Patterson High’s varsity boys and girls swim teams both lost to Ceres High on Friday, March 22, in their second Western Athletic Conference meet.

The Ceres boys outscored Patterson 90-82, while the Bulldogs girls outscored the Tigers 91-68.

Despite the local teams’ 0-2 league records, Patterson coach Amy Castillo testified to the dramatic improvements made by the swimmers.

“Individuals and relay teams are cutting times,” Castillo said. “I am excited about how the kids are responding to the challenges we give them, and how they are motivated to keep getting better.”

Jenevy Esqueda placed first for Patterson in the girls 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 34.24 seconds.

Among the highest-finishing Patterson boys was Michael D’Onofrio, whose first-place time in the 200 individual medley, 2:18.72, was more than 30 seconds faster than the next finisher.

In the boys 50 freestyle, Aaron Gonzales claimed first place with a 23.78-second swim. His teammate Austin Johnson took first in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 1:00.63.

Other noteworthy performances for the Patterson boys included Matthew Schaa’s first-place times in the 100 backstroke (1:11.88) and 500 freestyle (6:00.06) and Justin Mora’s top mark in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.88).

D’Onofrio, Gonzales, Johnson and Schaa also led the boys 200 medley relay team to a first-place finish in 1:36.38.
