Patterson’s Creekside Middle School placed second in the seventh-grade competition in the Stanislaus County Academic Pentathlon on Saturday, March 23, in Ceres.

Creekside, which finished behind only Prescott Middle School in Modesto, was one of eight county junior high and middle schools whose seventh- and eighth-grade students competed in a series of speeches, tests, essays and a Super Quiz.

The Academic Pentathlon — held this year at Blaker-Kinser School — is a competition that awards academic achievement of students with grade-point averages ranging from 1.0 to 4.0.

Students were tested in five areas — essay, speech, math, social science and language and literature — to earn both team and individual awards in the GPA-divided categories of honors, scholastic and varsity.

“We’re proud of all of our students who competed, and we believe that academic competition is as important as any athletic competition,” Phil Alfano, superintendent of Patterson Joint Unified School District, said Tuesday, March 26.

The Stanislaus County Office of Education, Omega Nu sorority and Education Foundation of Stanislaus County sponsored the event.
