Gary Singh, a Patterson High School senior, won the 76th annual Patterson Lions Club student speaker contest on Feb. 13 at Patterson Covenant Church.

Two competitors — Singh, 18, son of Amrit Singh and Joginder Kaur, and Michael D’ Onofrio, 17-year-old son of Mario and Elizabeth D’Onofrio, also a Patterson High senior — spoke on the topic, “How Do We Create and Keep Jobs in America?”

Competitors are required to speak for five to 10 minutes and are judged on delivery, effectiveness and text. Singh received $75 for first place, and D’Onofrio received $25.

Singh went on to participate in the Lions Club Zone Contest in Los Banos at the beginning of March, where he earned a certificate of participation. Abraham Ahkar of Gustine won the zone contest.

The winner of a regional competition in Turlock will go on to district competition this month, and the district winner advances to the state level.
