A funeral service is planned for Saturday, April 6 for Leo Fred Halseth, who died in the early morning hours of April 2 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice house in Hughson.
Mr. Halseth was a Patterson native and lifelong resident of Patterson. He was born to Fred and Thea Halseth in Turlock on Dec. 17, 1927. Mr. Halseth grew up on his parents’ farm on Fig Avenue in Patterson. He graduated from Patterson High School in 1946. Mr. Halseth worked at several jobs before partnering with his brother-in-law Lewis Washburn to form Patterson Vining Company and later Leo Halseth Harvesting. He worked at the commercial harvesting business for nearly 40 years before retiring in the mid 1990s.
As a young man, Mr. Halseth was a Sea Scout leader as well as a Boy Scout leader. He was a past member of the Lions Club and a Patterson Fire Department volunteer for many years. He served as Patterson Chamber of Commerce President and as City Councilman for nine years. He was an active member of the Covenant Church his entire adult life.
Mr. Halseth enjoyed life to the fullest, according to his family. His passion for traveling and entertaining was well known. He enjoyed gardening and working in the shop, always coming up with unique solutions to unusual problems. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bird watching. Mr. Halseth was truly a renaissance man, with a love for science, nature, technology, geography and astronomy. His passing has left a void in his family that can never be filled.
His beloved wife of 64 years, Gloria Swanson Halseth and sons, Kenneth and his wife, Pat, and Michael and his wife, Maryann; daughters, Christy Halseth and Kathy Ross and her husband, Ken, survive Mr. Halseth. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: Travis Halseth, Tyson Halseth, Cole Halseth, John Halseth, Steven Halseth, Robert Ross, David Ross and Rebecca Ross, in addition to four great grandchildren; Lucas Ross, Lainey Ross, Sam Ross and Cade Halseth. His brothers, Roland and Emerald Halseth, survive him. He was preceded in death by his brother, Earl and sisters, Meda, Marlene and Sharon.
A visitation will be observed from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 5 at Hillview Funeral Chapel, 450 W. Las Palmas Ave., in Patterson. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 6 at the Patterson Covenant Church in Patterson. Burial will follow at Patterson District Cemetery.
