The CHP is looking for the driver of a 2005 to 2007 purple Dodge Charger with a black hood, black rear spoiler and “Daytona” lettering on the sides, according to a Monday, April 8 release from the CHP. The color of the vehicle also is known as “Plum Crazy,” according to the CHP.
“If the driver of the “Plum Crazy”-colored Charger believes they were in the area prior to, or after the collision, they are being asked to contact the Modesto Area CHP Office,” the release states. “If anyone has pertinent information on the vehicle, or driver, they are also being asked to contact the Modesto Area CHP Office immediately.”
The CHP’s request comes more than a week after Barajas died when the 1999 Acura Integra he was riding in struck a power pole on Highway 33 about half a mile south of Pomelo Avenue at 9:58 a.m.
The driver of the vehicle, 21-year-old Fabian Moralez, was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment of minor injuries and later released, according to the CHP officer Eric Parsons. His 17-year-old brother, Samuel Moralez Jr., also of Patterson, was riding in the back seat and was taken to the same hospital with serious injuries.
The southbound Acura hit the power pole on the east side of the highway after veering to the right and then overcorrecting and veering to the left across the highway, according to the CHP.
After the accident, Fabian Moralez told the CHP he had swerved to avoid a vehicle matching the description of the Charger that had veered into his lane. However the highway patrol only has indicated it is seeking the driver as a possible witness. The release issued this week stated it is possible the driver of the Charger may not be aware that he or she has information that would assist with the investigation into the collision.
Anyone with information on the vehicle or its whereabouts is asked to contact the CHP’s Modesto office at 545-7440.
