But instead of measuring themselves against the competition, Patterson coach Amy Castillo said the Tigers considered how they stacked up against their own best times and records.
“Overall, I was proud of the team during the WAC meet,” Castillo said. “There were swimmers that continued to drop their times, swimmers competing in events for the first time, and they all did very well.”
Patterson came away with a fourth-place team finish among the league’s seven squads.
The girls (4-2 WAC) finished fourth place, while the boys (3-3) placed fifth.
Among the swimmers who will continue their seasons at the Sac-Joaquin Section meet May 9 to 11 at Tokay High in Lodi is Michael D’Onofrio, who earlier in the season qualified in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.
The boys 200 freestyle relay team of D’Onofrio, Austin Johnson, Matthew Schaa and Aaron Gonzales, which won the 200 relay Saturday with a time of 1 minute, 42.16 seconds, will also compete at sections.
Castillo said many of the team’s swimmers are still getting better.
“It is bittersweet for the (league) season to be over because so many swimmers are still improving on technique and times,” Castillo said. “I am looking forward to sections and next year. Hopefully, our athletes will continue with summer swimming and be ready to battle next season.”
Individual performances from the league meet spotlighted by Castillo include victories by Alondra Arteaga in the girls 50-yard freestyle (44.27 seconds) and Victoria Rodgers in the 100 butterfly (1:38.75).
Julissa Saltos (1:19.85) took first in the 100 freestyle race; Maura Gallegos won the 500 freestyle (8:22.30); Matilda McNamara placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:38.81); and Lauren Cabonce led the 100 breaststroke (1:49.95).
Johnson also won the 50 freestyle (26.68), and Steven Halseth placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.02).
The Tigers also counted victories by Justin Mora in the 200 individual medley (2:42.22), and Bailey Sawyer in the 100 butterfly (1:17.94).
