One of the newest Patterson Police Services deputies has a familiar face.

Adam Basmajian, assigned in March to serve as Patterson’s school resource officer, was a regular patrol deputy in town from 2005 to 2007.

He took over in early March for former school resource officer Deputy Casey Hill, who became a detective dedicated to Patterson by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, which has a contract to provide police services to Patterson.

He has even helped patrol the Apricot Fiesta as part of the sheriff’s horseback unit, and plans to work the upcoming fiesta from May 31 to June 2.

“He’s a great fit, because he’s already familiar with the community,” said Patterson police chief, Tori Hughes on Tuesday, April 30. “He’ll do a great job.”

Basmajian has served 10 years on patrol with the sheriff’s department, the coroner’s office and in Patterson. He said he wanted to gain experience in a different area of the law.

“One thing I wanted to learn about was juvenile law to be a more well-rounded deputy,” he said. “It’s also an opportunity to assist the department in the summer.”

Basmajian said the position will give him a chance to build positive relationships between law enforcement and children, many of whom have only had negative experiences with police.

He already knows the town, but anticipates he’ll face a learning curve with students.

“It’s a learning experience learning the kids,” he said. “Mostly learning the kids I need to keep an eye on.”
