Patterson High’s varsity softball team had a one-run lead heading into the fifth inning but couldn’t hold it, as visiting Central Catholic High of Modesto scored five unanswered runs in the final three innings to seize the game 7-3 on May 1.

With the loss, Patterson drops to 5-6 in Western Athletic Conference play, while the Central Catholic Raiders improve to 11-0 in league competition.

The Raiders took an early lead against Patterson starter Bailey Boschi, capitalizing on a Gabby Dias RBI single in the top of the first inning to make it 1-0.

Boschi retired the next five batters she faced before running into trouble with two outs in the top of the third. Central Catholic’s Emily Raspo launched a triple over the left fielder’s head and came around to score on another Dias single that found its way through the infield.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tigers’ bats came alive.

Francheska Olvera drew a leadoff walk, and Sadie Schut’s single to center field put runners on first and second with one out for Patterson. Keana Lindsey followed with a RBI double to left before Cassandra Olvera tied the game at 2-2 with a run-scoring single into right.

With runners at the corners, Cassandra Olvera stole second base. But instead of attempting to toss out the base stealer, Central Catholic’s catcher opted to try to catch Lindsey leading off the bag at third. The pickoff effort sailed into right field, and Lindsey crossed the plate, giving the Tigers a 3-2 advantage.

The Tigers lead was short-lived, however, as the Raiders immediately got to Boschi in the top of the fifth.

Raspo led off the inning with a double to left-center field. Dias followed with a single to center, and Central Catholic’s third-base coach didn’t hesitate in waving Raspo around with the potential tying run.

Courtney Palla started the relay from the outfield, and Lindsey’s throw was up the first base line a bit. Tiger catcher Kianna Garza caught it in plenty of time, however, and held onto the ball during the play at the plate to momentarily preserve the lead.

But the Raiders struck back, when Gia Rodoni sent Boschi’s offering to left field, over the fence, for a two-run homer that bounced onto Las Palmas Avenue and gave Central Catholic back the lead, 4-3.

Kelsea Lopes later pounded an RBI single and Josie Flores tacked on a sacrifice fly for a 6-3 Raider advantage.

Central Catholic sent seven batters to the plate in the sixth inning against reliever Lucero Vargas. With the bases loaded and two outs, a Raider batter hit a slow roller down the third-base line. The throw across the diamond was not in time, allowing another runner to come home to provide the final margin of victory.

Rodoni retired the final nine batters she faced to earn the win inside the pitcher’s circle.
