A black Nissan 2000 pickup heading north on Highway 33 attempted a left turn and was struck head-on by a white Ford E250 van heading south. The pickup, carrying five people, then spun and struck a semi tractor-trailer behind it, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Chuck Leon.
Ana Manzo Dee Perez, 44, of Merced died on impact while sitting in the middle rear seat of the Nissan pickup truck, according to the Stanislaus County coroner's office.
The driver and front passenger of the Nissan pickup sustained major injuries, and were transported by Air Ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Modesto, Leon said. The driver of the Ford van was transported by ground ambulance to Memorial Hospital as well. All driver's and passengers were wearing their seat belts according to CHP Officer Brandon Moore. The semi-truck received minor damage, according to Leon. The names of the accident victims are currently unavailable.
The accident had caused a minor traffic detour to spring on Lemon Avenue. Caltrans cleaned up the scene by 7:40 a.m.
