God created us with a spiritual hunger for him. Nothing in this life can really satisfy us. No amount of money, or power or pleasure can fulfill our desperate longing for meaning, our insatiable need for true love.
The problem with the human experience is that we try to fill our desperate need for God with a cheap substitute. A trip to Hawaii, a new girl friend, a fancier car, an exciting new romantic relationship, the latest video game, longer hours at work, or some alcohol or drug to ease the pain of our loneliness. But the desperate need for true satisfaction keeps showing its ugly face.
Only God, only he can give you the joy, the peace and the love that you long for. Nothing else, no one else!
David discovered this truth when he was in the worst moments of his life. When he wrote this psalm he was fleeing from his son, Absalom, who wanted to kill him and he went to the desert of Judah; an inhospitable place, a place of intense heat and barren conditions. The desert of Judah provided the physical atmosphere to highlight his inner spiritual need.
The only way we can come to God is when we are at the end of ourselves. When we can no longer continue putting little patches to cover the awful brokenness of our lives; we come to God when we hit rock bottom.
And then, a beautiful thing happens; his love becomes better than life.
Do you find yourself lost in the middle of a difficult situation? Has someone you loved betrayed you? Do you have everything you wanted, but still felt empty … then you qualify! Come to Jesus… come to him…. Just as you are … He alone has living waters to quench your thirst, He is the bread of life that truly satisfies. His love is better than life!
