25 years ago – July 14, 1988

Patterson may soon have a new service organization. The new Kiwanis Club of Patterson will hold its charter night this Friday at the Del Puerto Hotel.

Chamber of Commerce membership has climbed to 126 after a recent drive. Members totaled 160 a year ago.

City Manager John Nachbar has announced the hiring of Eric Brown as Patterson’s new planning director. He comes here from San Mateo and will be in charge of planning this city’s growth. Patterson’s population is pegged at 7000.

50 years ago – July 18, 1963

Lt. Walter Ward is the new officer in charge at the Crows Landing Naval Auxiliary Landing Field.

Patterson High will experiment this coming school year with several courses offered with 25-minute courses.

Boat racer Ernie Rose handily won the Nationals last weekend to add another title to his growing list.

75 years ago – July 15, 1938

The two-day run of the American Legion-sponsored Horsethief Bend celebration begins tonight.

Ed Martins, former operator of the Westley Service Station, will soon begin construction of his own station on the corner of D Street and Highway 33.

The Rev. C.A. Hedlind, pastor of the Covenant Church, was critically injured Saturday evening when his car hit a pole after tearing out a fence in front of the Westley Lumber Yard.

100 years ago – July 19, 1913

The Patterson Home Bakery is now wrapping all loaves of bread as they come out of the oven to insure they remain fresh and sanitary.

Plans are being promoted throughout the area for construction of a roadway over Pacheco Pass.

The bridge tender of the Crows Landing Bridge has been relieved of his duties after he fired shots at West Side men attending a party on July 4. The Grayson bridge tender’s salary was dropped from $35 to $20 a month.

Crows Landing and Newman interests have decided to press for a roadway through Salado Canyon to meet up with the Mt. Hamilton Road.
