The scholar organization recognizes top students for leadership, scholarship and community involvement. Monique has a 3.5 GPA, and volunteers with the Youth Action Committee, is a student clerk at Patterson High and volunteered at summer camp at Apricot Valley Elementary School this summer.
Her guardian, Jeannie Smith-Woods, said the local school district and teachers and counselors at Creekside Middle School and Patterson High School helped Monique obtain her good grades. Monique wants to be a veterinarian and study at University of California, Davis, or join the military.
The National Society of High School Scholars, formed in 2002, recognizes academic excellence at the high school level and encourages students to apply talents for the betterment of themselves and the world. For information www.nshss.org.
