The Patterson High varsity volleyball team began its season with a tournament championship after winning four of five matches against nonleague opponents in Orestimba High’s 3rd annual Dig-In Volleyball Tournament, which was played Saturday, Aug. 31, in Newman.

The Tigers notched straight-set wins over Linden High (25-20, 25-17), Orestimba (25-10, 26-24) and Manteca High (25-21, 25-20), before posting a three-set victory over Waterford High (25-16, 23-25, 15-10) on Saturday.

Patterson coach Tarah High was excited to see her team overcome a loss in the first match of the tournament against Le Grand High (14-25, 12-25), only to battle its way to the championship game.

“Once we worked out the kinks in our defense in the first match, we really started to communicate, which allowed us more follow through with our offense,” High said. “It would have been nice for the competition to increase as we warmed up, but I guess this will get us prepared for our league games.”

PHS senior Mele Tupouata, an all-tournament selection, had 11 kills for the match against Waterford, and junior Bailey Boschi scored five aces. Sophomore Julia Sill contributed four aces and 13 assists for Patterson.

Tupouata recorded 13 kills and eight blocks, and classmate Kiara Job had three kills and four blocks as the Tigers won against Manteca. Senior Dayna Hansen totaled three kills and three digs for the match. Sill had 18 assists, while senior Tiana Barron had 12 digs.

Leading Patterson against Orestimba were Tupouata, with five kills, and Job, with four kills. Senior Mariele Schut scored three kills, and junior Cassie Santelices had five assists.

Against Linden, Tupouata (eight blocks), Hansen and junior Esther Ekwueme each tallied two kills apiece. Sill chipped in with six assists.

Hansen had 13 digs to lead Patterson as the tournament opened against Le Grand.

The Tigers will continue the season Thursday, Sept. 5, as they travel to face Kimball High of Tracy at 4 p.m.
