The Patterson High girls tennis team recently won a pair of Western Athletic Conference matches, earning an 8-1 victory against visiting Central Valley High of Ceres on Thursday, Sept. 12, after cruising on the road over Livingston High, 9-0, on Sept. 10.

The Tigers (2-0) won five of their six singles matches and swept doubles play in the defeat over the Central Valley Hawks.

The conference win was sweet for Patterson, which battles on despite an inexperienced roster. According to coach Raustand Nzoule, finishing each match was the key.

"These two matches were a first for most of the girls on the team," Nzoule said. "Many of them became anxious as they realized that these were real (scored) matches. We are going to continue to work more on making less unforced errors and on building confidence."

At No. 1 singles, the Tigers gained a 7-6, 6-4 win, with Kelby Norfleet of Patterson defeating Emeley Amaya of Central Valley.

Patterson’s Kendal Norfleet bested Central Valley's Naomi Torres, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.

"Kelby and Kendal are the natural leaders on the team," Nzoule said. "They are respected and looked up to by each player. They show up to every practice; help with the set up and the court cleaning; and, when needed, they help other girls with their game skills."

Tiger Avery Chairez followed with a straight-set win over Jadah Jackson, 6-1, 7-6 at No. 3 singles.

Keanna Garza of Patterson earned a No. 5 singles victory over Sandra Luna of Central Valley in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, and Lucero Vargas defeated Central Valley’s Claudia Martinez at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-4.

Patterson’s No. 1 doubles team, Antonia Perez and Santana Mata, opened by defeating Teresa Diaz and Vanessa Monroy, 7-5, 6-1.

At No. 2 doubles, Arianna Rico and Ngoc Nguyen of Patterson beat Samantha Sotomayor and Princess Pe 7-6, 6-2.

The Tigers’ No. 3 pair, Catarina Borges and Wendy Zuleta, won in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, against Chelsea Flores and Ayme Nguyen.

In the league opener for both squads, Patterson took firm control over the Livingston Wolves by sweeping play in all nine matches.

Tigers’ No. 1 singles player Kelby Norfleet batted down Livingston’s Marbella Mascorro, 6-3, 7-6.

In No. 2 singles, Kendal Norfleet shined in a 6-4, 6-2, win over the Wolves’ Jasdeep Bassi. Patterson’s No. 3 singles player Chairez bested Taranpreet Kaur, 6-2, 6-0, while the No. 4 singles, Ashley Afalla earned a 6-2, 6-2, triumph over Maggie Mendoza.

Patterson’s Garza picked up the victory at No. 5 singles, topping Maria Vera, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.

Patterson’s No. 6 singles player, Vargas, defeated Livingston’s Karina Romas in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

The Tigers also landed three victories in doubles play.

Patterson’s No. 1 tandem of Perez and Mata defeated the Wolves’ Anveet Uppal and Elisa Armenta, 6-1, 6-3, and the Tigers’ No. 2 doubles team of Rico and Nguyen took care of Livingston’s Jennifer Garcia and Amalia Barragan, 6-4, 7-5.

The Tigers’ No. 3 pairing of Borges and Zuleta earned a win over Livingston’s Cynthia Frias and Naomi Toledo, 6-0, 7-6.

Patterson will continue its season at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, when it hosts the Ceres High Bulldogs.
