A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Sept. 30 for Howard C. Gomes of Patterson, who died on Monday, Sept. 23 at his residence.

Mr. Gomes, 88, was a lifelong resident of Patterson. He worked as a ditch tender for the Patterson Irrigation District for 20 years. Mr. Gomes served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Patterson and a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 60 years, where served as a Past Grand Knight.

Mr. Gomes was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 168 of Patterson and the McDonald’s daily coffee group. He was an avid tinkerer “Mr. Fix-It,” and antique tool collector. He loved playing poker, going to casinos and driving around with his friends.

Mr. Gomes is survived by his sons, Dan and his wife, Cyndy Gomes of Patterson and Richard Gomes of Sacramento; brother, Darryl Gomes of East Bay; grandchildren, Jason and his wife, Marci McCleery, Julie and her husband, Chad Hubin and Justin and his wife, Britney Gomes, all of Patterson, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Charmaine Gomes who died in 2010.

A visitation will be observed from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29 followed by a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel, 450 W. Las Palmas Ave., in Patterson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 30 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 529 I St., Patterson. Burial will follow at Patterson District Cemetery, 10800 Highway 33, Patterson.
