Cross country: PHS boys win league opener

The Patterson High varsity boys cross country team opened its Western Athletic Conference season Sept. 18 with a triumph over host Los Banos High.

The Patterson varsity boys defeated Los Banos, 23-34.

Nathan Stanton paced the Tigers in the 3.1-mile race, claiming a first-place finish with a time of 16 minutes, 36 seconds. Teammates Antonio Venegas (second, 17:07), Steven Halseth (fifth, 18:38), Dylan Halland (seventh, 19:06) and Jose Jaramillo (eighth, 20:03) rounded out the top five finishers.

The Patterson varsity girls team earned the top spot in the 3.1-mile race while falling to Los Banos, 23-32.

Lupe Ventura (20:26) came away with a first-place finish in the 3.1-mile trek. Teammates Brenda Vargas (fifth, 22:55), Jenevy Esqueda (sixth, 24:12), Aly Carrasco (ninth, 24:32) and Stephanie Esqueda (12th, 25:36) rounded out the top five finishers.

In the junior varsity boys race, Sean Hicks blazed to a 2-mile time of 13:38 to take first place.

Teammates Carlos Ponce (second, 13:40), Arturo Navarro (fourth, 13:45), Ethan Schut (fifth, 14:23) and Daniel Isquierdo (sixth, 15:20) nearly completed a Tigers sweep of the race’s top six spots, and Patterson claimed the JV boys race, 18-37.

The Tigers will continue their season at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, when they travel to Oakdale for the Woodward Invitational.
