School district plans building purchase

Patterson Joint Unified School District officials were given the green light on Monday Oct. 7, when local trustees voted to approve a purchase agreement to buy a building in the Keystone Pacific Business Park on Baldwin Road.

Trustees gave the go-ahead and approved the purchase agreement for 530 Keystone Blvd, Unit A, in the same complex where the district office is located.

District officials will apply for a $1.1 million loan to purchase the 8,700-square-foot building to be used and rented out by the district for shared use.

Part of the building will be used for staff development, teacher training, seminars and conferences. PJUSD administrators are aiming to reduce out-of-district travel by hosting more events in Patterson for teachers throughout the county.

“It will save time and money for the district as the staff will not have to travel to Modesto or Turlock for classes — and the one teacher instructor can come here,” Phil Alfano, superintendent of schools, said recently, noting that the district wants to take advantage of the space available

“We need to start putting more things out here — we have the ability to offer training for other districts,” Alfano added.

In addition, local district officials are hoping the Modesto Junior College satellite campus will eventually go in across the street on land already purchased by the Yosemite Community College District. The new district building would have space available to rent to MJC for additional classes.

The general public is welcome to rent space as well.

Also, at the May 13 board meeting, when officials first presented the idea of the purchase, Steve Menge, PJUSD assistant superintendent of administrative services, told the board the district is also in need of additional storage space for the food services department.

The other half of the building would be used for storage of food and also for disrictwide maintenance supplies and equipment. The district would charge rent for the storage. No money would be used from the district’s general fund to purchase the new building.

District officials also plan to use income generated from the Zacharias and Baldwin roads property’s farming lease to pay the loan payments.

That property was originally purchased to house a second high school before the downturn in the economy stalled those plans; it is currently being farmed, but the land will be used for the 54-acre second high school complex in the future.
