Amazon’s Fulfillment Center ships first customer order

At 7:33 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, Amazon confirmed that its new 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center in Patterson has shipped its first order—a curtain rod set—to a customer in Florida.

The Patterson site currently hosts more than 300 full-time employees to help pack and ship items to Amazon customers throughout the world. As an added holiday bonus, Amazon announced that they will be hiring more than 70,000 seasonal employees in order to meet customer demand during the holidays for their 89 global fulfillment centers.

Amazon claims that the median pay inside the fulfillment center is 30 percent higher than jobs in traditional retail stores, and include stock grants for full-time employees, as well as a comprehensive benefits package—comprised of health care and 401K options.

According to a release by Amazon, the retail giant also offers full-time employees programs like Career Choice, where it will pay up to 95 percent of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon.

It’s been leaked that since the program’s launch last year, employees have pursued a variety of degrees, including, game design, visual communications, nursing, IT programing and radiology.

Unfortunately what the news media including the Modesto Bee have failed to report to Central Valley people is that Amazon is known for a very high turnover rate and hiring/firing scheme. They come into communities promising good full time jobs with great benefits but after a few months, end up firing anywhere from 50 to 80% of those employees because they cant meet their outrageous and unrealistic productivity standards. Then they start bringing tons of employees from temp agencies because it is cheaper for them to use temps for a couple months till they burn them out then fire them and rehire fresh temps and repeat the cycle. Just give it a couple months and you will all see. It does not benefit Amazon financially to keep so many employees full time with benefits and all. They prefer to fire and rehire because it kicks in the tax incentives for them as this type of scheme makes the company seem as if it is constantly adding employees. I worked at the Longs warehouse in Lathrop before it was bought by CVS. They were doing the same thing there until they messed with the wrong group of employees which in turn sued the company and believe it or not...they won! My cousin worked at one of the Amazon warehouses outside California when it first opened up, and he told me this is exactly what will happen in Patterson and Tracy. He said 80% of the original employees he worked with at one of these massive Amazon warehouses were fired within 8 months or so. Most of them fired because the company sets unrealistic productivity standards and goals which only a robot can meet, not a regular human. Many of you will not believe what I am saying here now, but in time you will see that I simply spoke the truth. Amazon needs to stop this hiring and firing scheme and setting productivity standards that a normal human can meet. I hope the people of Patterson and Tracy won't tolerate this type of behavior by Amazon in our communities and are prepared to fight and sue these type of companies when the moment comes. I still wish all the new Amazon employees in Patterson and Tracy the best of luck and I hope Amazon treats you right. Thats all.
