The Patterson High cross country team added a pair of strong showings to its 2013 season during the Sac-Joaquin Subsection meet Saturday, Nov. 9, at Frogtown at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp.

Senior Nathan Stanton placed seventh out of 219 runners in the varsity boys race with a 3-mile time of 16 minutes, 47 seconds, to collect one of 10 individual qualifying spots for this week’s section championship meet, which will be held Saturday in Folsom.

Only the top 10 teams and the 10 fastest individual runners are eligible to run in Saturday’s section meet.

Also for the Tigers, junior Lupe Ventura placed 24th out of 170 runners in the varsity girls race with a 3-mile time of 21:07, to earn an individual qualifying spot for the section competition.

Stanton and Ventura, who claimed the top two individual spots in both varsity races in the Western Athletic Conference championship on Oct. 30, were section meet qualifiers in 2012.

Patterson's varsity boys placed 15th out of 27 teams. Antonio Venegas finished 67th with a time of 18:33. Also contributing to the Patterson score were Steven Halseth (110th, 19:55), Tomas Virgen (113th, 20:04), Sean Hicks (135th, 20:41), Carlos Ponce (136th, 20:55) and Dylan Halland (152nd, 21:45).

Patterson's varsity girls placed 16th out of 22 schools. Tiger Brenda Vargas finished 73rd with a time of 23:38. Also on the Patterson team were Alejandra Carrasco (104th, 25:55), Jenevy Esqueda (111th, 27:02), Eriah Nano-Nutter (116th, 27:37), Stephanie Esqueda (117th, 27:37) and Carina Sotelo (131st, 29:59).

In the junior varsity boys race, Seth Dalmer set the pace for Patterson with a 139th-place finish and a 3-mile time of 24:20.

Patterson's sophomore boys had two runners cross the finish line during the 2-mile race at the subsection meet. The Tigers runners included Arturo Navarro (70th, 14:51) and Daniel Isquierdo (78th, 15:08).

Lanaeya Banks led Patterson's junior sophomore girls team with a time of 17:22, good enough for 54th place on the 2-mile course.

Stanton and Ventura compete in the Sac-Joaquin Section meet Saturday, Nov. 16, at Willow Hill in Folsom.

Up to five of the top individuals not on one of the qualifying teams at the section finals qualify for the CIF State Cross Country Championships.
