Top spellers from area schools, including those in Patterson, competed yesterday in the county spelling championships set for November.

The Elementary Spelling Championship for fourth-through sixth-graders began Nov. 6 at Gregori High School, 3701 Pirrone Road, Modesto. The Junior High Spelling Championship, for contestants in seventh to eighth-grade, is scheduled for Nov. 21 at the Petersen Event Center, 720 12th St. Modesto. The Stanislaus County Office of Education sponsors the spelling bees. Both events are open to the public and begin promptly at 5 p.m.

The top two spellers in the Elementary Spelling Championship will represent Stanislaus County at the state competition in Stockton on April 26, 2014. The top two spellers in the Junior High Spelling Championship will represent the county at state competition in San Rafael on May 3, 2014. The third place speller in each event will serve as an alternate.
