The lone local entry in the state cross-country meet on Nov. 30 is also Patterson High School's first state-level qualifier.

Senior Nathan Stanton took fourth place in the varsity boys race at the 2013 Sac-Joaquin Section Cross Country Meet on Saturday, Nov. 16. He ran the Willow Hills Reservoir 3.1-mile course next to Folsom High with a time of 16 minutes, 43 seconds.

Stanton's finish makes him an individual qualifier for the California Interscholastic Federation Cross Country Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Out of the field of 76 boys runners, up to five of the top individuals not on one of the qualifying teams moved on to the state competition.

"Nathan knows how to dig deep, and that's what makes the difference," said Patterson coach Joe Aguilar. "He has the dedication to really drive himself. To see him put in all the hard work — nobody deserves it more."

Patterson junior Lupe Ventura, who also ran as an individual at Willow Hill, missed qualifying for state for a second straight season. She finished the 5K course in 21:07 and was 28th place overall for varsity girls.

"Lupe can be proud. She finished off the season with a good race," Aguilar said. "She really pushes herself to do her best each time."
