In an effort to continue 88 years of holiday tradition, the City of Patterson and the Patterson-Westley Chamber of Commerce invites community members downtown on Saturday, Dec. 7 to herald in the Christmas holidays.
The local chamber is still taking applications for the ever-popular Electric Light Parade with the theme “It’s A Wonderful Town!” which will wind through the downtown streets. The applications can be picked up at the Wal-Mart service desk throughout Thanksgiving weekend, since City Hall will be closed that weekend. The application lists all parade rules and regulations. Parade entry applications must be returned to Walmart or Patterson City Hall by Monday, Dec. 2.
Soroptimist International of Patterson will once again host the Christmas trees in the South Park decorated by clubs, organizations, churches and individuals in the community. The tree lighting will be part of the local festivities.
Santa Claus will be at U.S. Bank, 13 Plaza Circle after the parade and each family will have one free photo taken with Santa.
The Center Building that houses the Patterson Township Historical Society museum will be open from 5 to 7:30 p.m., along with several downtown businesses.
Information about downtown entertainment was not available as of press time.
The Christmas celebration began in Patterson in the 1920s when Santa came to town bearing gifts for local children. In 1929, a lighted Christmas tree was a centerpiece in the downtown park. During that year’s festivities, 700 children received gifts from local donors and volunteers. Throughout the years, the downtown plaza became the city’s core focus. The first Electric Light Parade took to the city streets on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000 and remains a time-honored tradition.
