The Stanislaus Council of Governments will hold a public hearing soliciting comments on unmet transit needs in Stanislaus County Wednesday, Dec. 11, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hammon Senior Center, 1033 W. Las Palmas Ave. The hearing will help determine what unmet transit needs exist in the county before allocating state transportation funds for local street and road work throughout the county.
The public is invited to submit comments at the meeting. Spanish translation services will also be available at the hearing.
StanCOG is comprised of representatives of the cities and county government in Stanislaus County and is responsible for transportation projects throughout the county.
Patterson Mayor Luis Molina serves on the panel.
A 30-day public comment period on countywide unmet transit needs started on Nov. 11 and is set to conclude on Dec. 11. StanCOG is requesting comments—especially from the elderly and disabled—about the transportation needs of transit dependent individuals.
An unmet need is a need considered for transportation services of an individual or group of individuals within any part of Stanislaus County, which has not yet been programmed to receive California state Transportation Development Act funds. According to the StanCOG website, examples of needs include traditional fixed-route transit, curb-to-curb or door-to-door para-transit.
Unmet transit needs do not include additional trips that would duplicate existing transit services or transportation service needs that require corrective actions involving a time period that exceeds the present fiscal year, the website stated.
Written comments must be received by 5 p.m., December 11 and they will be made a part of the record.
According to state law a determination must be made that there are not areas in Stanislaus County with unmet transit needs, which can reasonably be met, before monies for streets and roads may be approved.
Any comments received at these public hearings will be incorporated into the analysis contained in the Fiscal Year 2014/15 Unmet Transit Needs Identification and Analysis Report, which will be presented to the StanCOG policy board in 2014.
