I find it hard to believe that in today’s day and age people still fear coming forward when they have been harassed or abused. Yet, that is exactly what is happening. Even in this small town there are women afraid to speak out against sexual harassment. There are elderly men and women that face abuse and fear retaliation if they complain to officials. Why?

We are a society that depends on laws to protect us from predatory behavior. Why then do we not exercise those very laws to cease the unwanted abuse, and ensure that the abuser is prevented from carrying out the same type of actions against our neighbor?

When you do not speak out, you give the abuser power to do it again, and do it to others. The cycle of abuse continues to spin out of control until one person with courage stands up and says, “No more”.

In all things, be that one person, say, “No more”.

Former City Councilwoman
