LOS BANOS -- Patterson High's varsity wrestling team earned its first Western Athletic Conference dual victory of the season Wednesday, Dec. 18, flattening the Pacheco High Panthers, 52-18.

The Tigers pulled away with wins in seven of the final eight matches. Patterson won seven matches by pin and three by decision, while Pacheco won three by pin.

"We preached all week at practice how we needed to come out and dictate the pace and score points," said Patterson coach Virgil Canseco. "We want to have the mindset to attack all the time, and I think that we did that. We got the points when we needed them, and pins when we had the opportunities."

Patterson wrestlers Daniel Cota (138 pounds), Manuel Cruz (145) and Dylan Christiansen (152) piled on three straight pins, giving the Tigers a 31-12 lead at the midway point and set off the victory.

Those wins paved the way for a continued Patterson assault.

"Everyone came in tonight to battle, and was ready to go," Cruz said. "Our varsity lineup is strong. I think we have the potential to be successful. We have the tools, we have the coaching."

In other wins, Patterson's Adrian Luna (106) pinned Leon Paulo in 4 minutes, 42 seconds; Sean D'Ocampo (120) beat Aaron Scuvari on an 4-2 decision; Jordan Canseco (126) topped Christian Brijalva on a 15-7 decision; Daniel Linares (160) defeated Marcus Azevedo on a 5-0 decision; Brad Gill (170) pinned Jonathan Lang in 2:49; Jerry Arredondo (182) pinned Ryan Dunagan in 1:32; and Francisco Plascencia (195) pinned Javier Gonzalez in 2:46.

"We know we have to come out and put in the work, and a lot of our kids did that tonight," Cruz said. "We had a couple of wrestlers that were on their backs, and they ended up coming back and pinning their opponents. We picked it up from there."

The WAC dual season continues at 6 p.m. Jan. 2 as Patterson hosts three-time defending league champion Los Banos High.

Junior varsity

Patterson's JV wrestlers also shot out of the gates and made a statement in their first dual triumph of the season, defeating Pacheco, 42-36.

The Tigers won five matches by pin and two by forfeit, while Pacheco won one by pin and five by forfeit.

Pins by Nick Molineri (126), Sergio Scoles (132), Michael Boschi (160), Brandon Momanyi (170) and Anthony Lucero (182) kept the momentum in favor of Patterson.
