For the first time in 12 years, snow fell in on December 27. The flakes started to come down about 8 a.m. and continued in light flurries for about two hours. Unlike surrounding areas, it stuck to the ground here, but was gone by noon.
The first in a series of what is expected to be a popular column in this newspaper, titled Patterson: Then and Now, started this week in the Irrigator. Its author is staffer Maddy Houk and the first column features the memories of longtime resident Manuel Mendes.
50 years ago – January 2, 1964
The American Legion may soon break ground for the construction of its new building. The old Legion building was destroyed by fire.
Housing construction for 1963 ran building permit totals to the highest mark ever. Permits were issued for 28 new single-family residences and four four-plexes. The total was listed as $610,000.
Some 25 volunteers cleared out the main floor of the Patterson library in under an hour so what renovation may proceed.
Sol Amen is no longer connected with the PATCO Lighting and Engineering Co., and his father-in-law Al Adams is the new general manager.
75 years ago – December 30, 1938
PI Editor R.C. Fleharty writes about a newspaper back east that asked those readers who plan to heavily imbibe over the New Year holiday to send in their obituary biographies in advance.
The 1938 year generally held its own locally on the business front. Beans and apricots aren’t moving much and local construction was almost non-existent, but many businesses either held their own or experienced slight increases.
A number of college students are home for the holidays including Madelyn Cox who attend a San Francisco medical school, and Charline Elfers who is enrolled in the Arrilaga Music School, also in San Francisco.
100 years ago – January 3, 1914
The phenomenal growth of the community of Patterson in the past three years is detailed on the front page of this week’s Patterson Irrigator.
Rainfall since Oct. 31 has totaled a good 5.62 inches.
The women in the south end of the colony plan to meet and form a social and educational society.
