The funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, Jan 16 for Maria Eva Cantu of Patterson, who died on Friday, Jan. 10 at her residence.

Mrs. Cantu, 80, was born in Edinburg, Texas to parents Tomasa Garza and Jorge Humberto DeLeon; she was the third of nine children. She met and married Jacinto Cantu, Jr. in 1952 and to this union 13 children were born.

In 1971 Maria Cantu and her family moved to Patterson where she worked in agriculture all her life until she became disabled in 1990. She was a very energetic woman whose priority in life was her children, according to her family. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family, planting flowers, sewing when she had good eyesight, cooking and sometimes playing bingo/(loteria) with her children. She was full of life. Above all, she believed in staying together as a family. She was a member of the Iglesia El Sinai in Grayson.

Maria Eva Cantu fought a good fight, she finished the course, and she kept the faith, according to her family. On Jan.10, 2014 God sent an angel to take this earthly angel to her heavenly home. 2 Corinthians 5:8 “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the LORD.”

Mrs. Cantu leaves to mourn her memory, seven sons; Jacinto Cantu, III, Ignacio Cantu, Ricardo Cantu, Rene Cantu and Carlos Cantu, all of Patterson and Jose M. Cantu and Samuel Cantu of McAllen, Texas; five daughters, Juanita Cantu, Irene Olvera, Ismelda Cantu-Barrera, Leticia Melchor and Mary Lou Cantu, all of Patterson; three daughters-in-law; two sons-in-law; 39 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; sisters, Antonia Aguirre and Matilde Aguirre, both of Edingburg, Texas and a host of nieces and nephews. Her parents, Tomasa Garza and Jorge Humberto DeLeon, her husband, Jacinto Cantu, Jr., her son, Jorge Humberto Cantu and six siblings, precede her in death.

A visitation and Evening Service was held Wednesday, Jan.15 at Iglesia El Sinai in Grayson. The Funeral Service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan.16 at Iglesia El Sinai in Grayson. Burial will follow at Patterson District Cemetery in Patterson.

Hillview Funeral Chapel is handling services, 450 W. Las Palmas Ave., Patterson.
