Dear Editor:

Nick Rappley's story on Page 2 of last week's paper (Repairs on way for historic downtown building) caught me by surprise. We have a couple of board members who regularly attend City Council meetings and we missed seeing that item on the agenda.

But I am delighted that the council recognizes the importance of that Center building and the role it played in the history of Patterson.

The council seems to understand how critical it is to perform proper maintenance to a building that has the coveted Historic Landmark recognition that our center building has earned.

We strongly encourage that experts in the field of historic architectural preservation be contacted and consulted to insure that all work adheres to the standards that are required to allow the building to maintain it's “landmark” status.

Our downtown is unique. It's important that we take care of our last remaining original building.

"We will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed." New York Times Editorial (on the destruction of Penn Station) Carol Scoles,

President, Patterson Township Historical Society
