Patterson Joint Unified School District students participated in the two-day Stanislaus County Honor Band and County Orchestra event at Modesto Junior College in January with one local student — Xandra Carter — taking a special honor.

Creekside Middle School eighth-grader Xandra Carter, daughter of Rathana and Darrin Carter, is one of the four students chosen from the 75 who participated in honor orchestra for the California State University, Stanislaus Summer Music Program.

Xandra will attend music camp this summer at the college campus in Turlock. She’ll participate in ear training, music theories and classes that include singing for non-singers, rock band and song writing, as well as chamber music and conducting among other activities.

Phil Alfano, superintendent of schools, praised the students and teachers from Patterson who participated.

“I attended the orchestra performance this weekend and it was outstanding,” Alfano said. “Susan Ingram has done a remarkable job turning around our music program. It has been such as success that we hired a second teacher this year — LeAnn Cassidy— just to handle elementary music.”
