After suffering their first defeat of the campaign one day before, a three-run fifth inning propelled the Tigers to a 6-2 win over the Modesto Panthers.
Tied 2-2, Patterson (5-1) broke out in the top of the fifth as Ebony Garza was struck by a pitch, followed by a base hit to center field by Keana Lindsey. An opposite-field bloop single into right from Valeria Ruiz drove in Garza from second base and gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead. Kianna Garza then delivered a two-run single into center to provide Patterson some breathing room.
Lucero Vargas posted yet another solid outing inside the circle, allowing just one unearned run through four innings of relief work. The right-hander notched five strikeouts and issued one walk on the afternoon, and finished off the final six batters she faced in order to earn the win.
Patterson wasted no time on Tuesday, as Leanna Lindsey led off the game with a single to left field, stole second and third and scored on a base knock up the middle by Hayley Anderson. Anderson swiped second base and then came around to score on a bunt single by Ebony Garza, giving the Tigers the early 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Patterson's defense couldn't execute a play on a grounder to the left side as the Tigers first baseman dropped the ball on the throw across the infield, allowing a Modesto batter to reach safely.
The Modesto base runner later scored from second after Patterson's catcher muffed a pop up that allowed the ball to drop for another error, leading to the first run of the game for the home team.
Patterson starting pitcher Bailey Boschi exited after three innings, allowing one unearned run, two hits, two walks and striking out three.
Vargas walked the first batter she faced in the bottom of the fourth, and a ground out to the right side moved the Modesto base runner over to second. One batter later, the Panthers scored the tying run on a throwing error by Patterson's second baseman.
The Tigers responded with three runs in the top of the fifth on four hits to retake the lead for good.
Keana Lindsey led off the seventh inning with a double over the head of Modesto's left fielder, advanced to third on a ground out by Ruiz, and scored an insurance run on a sacrifice fly to right-center field by Idalis Besinaiz.
The Tigers will host a Friday, March 14 Western Athletic Conference game against the Livingston High Wolves. Game time is 4 p.m.
