It was a very defensive game from the start, but the scales tipped in Patterson’s favor when senior forward Blanca Ramirez started off the lead for the Tigers, scoring 1-0 in the first half.
The Los Banos girls settled down, turning away many tries by the Patterson team as the first half continued. But with the Patterson girls putting a lot of pressure on the Los Banos team, it felt like it was just a matter of time until they broke loose.
Junior Anna Bingham had lined up a play perfectly, allowing a great look at the goal, but sent the shot wide right. The frustration clearly showed on her face as she dropped back on defense. It didn’t get any easier for the Tigers once super sophomore Cinthia Cantero faced a major collision and came up limping.
She fought hard to stay in the game and was able to walk off the injury. As soon as she was able to secure retribution, Cantero attempted to make a great corner short right to the front of the net before it was fought off by Los Banos’ goalie.
Senior Riquel Benitez, who ended up with one assist, answered back to make a beautiful drive right up the gut through three defenders. Unfortunately, the ball rolled and missed the right goal by less than a foot. Ramirez didn’t let the steam get to her. With 14 minutes left in the half, she came down the left side of the field and kicked a goal in for a 2-0 run.
The momentum picked up and Patterson was off. Sophomore forward Paulina Gonzalez made a great move for another score in less than one minute later. She made a couple of very nice passes only to end up with the ball again off a deflection, sending it home. Just that fast, it was 3-0, the Patterson Tigers in charge.
Before the second half, senior Monique Garcia-Bradley made a couple of great passes into the middle only to have the shots sail either over or around the net.
The next time Monique got the ball, she meant business. She controlled the ball herself, made a great head shot to set herself up, and, with her right foot, plucked the ball out of mid-air to send it sailing into the net for 4-0 in Patterson’s favor.
Los Banos looked cross, but didn’t let up. The second half of the game remained otherwise scoreless had it not been for Paulina Gonzalez, who came back with a vengeance.
Paulina Gonzalez finished up the scoring in the second half with a goal the made the final score 5-0 with Patterson coming out on top.
The Patterson Tigers girls JV soccer team won Thursday's home conference game against Los Banos by a score of 7-0.
