25 years ago – June 8, 1989

Jacqueline Quiroba is the new Miss Patterson, having been crowned at last weekend’s Apricot Fiesta.

Patterson High’s 75th graduating class is headed by valedictorian Gretchen Walker and salutatorian Kathleen Perry.

Dale Earnhardt’s NASCAR Lumina will be displayed this week at Thompson Chevrolet.

City Manager John Nachbar has received a salary increase of about $2,500 to $49,215 a year.

A new noise law aimed at barking dogs has been passed by the City Council.

50 years ago – June 4, 1964

Ninety-five students will graduate tonight from Patterson High School. Tom French is the valedictorian and Kenneth Almquist the salutatorian.

Henry Wong, owner of the Welty Hotel that suffered major damage in last week’s South Third Street fire, has announced he will rebuild.

Father H.J. Beutler, pastor at Sacred Heart Church, is leaving for Santa Barbara. He will be replaced by Father Edward Hooley, who will transfer here from St. Louis.

75 years ago – June 2, 1937

Karl Robinson, head of the agricultural department at the high school the past 12 years, has accepted a similar position with Sonora High.

An employment issue after the dismissal and then rehiring of a local teacher has created a write-in campaign for a seat on the elementary school board. Incumbent Lester Glotfelty’s name will appear on the ballot, while Harold Thorkelson is the write-in candidate. A crowd of nearly 100 attended a board meeting last week, protesting the teacher’s dismissal.

Eighth graders Mary Ann Wheeland and Waino Airola received the citizenship award presented by the American Legion.

100 years ago – June 6, 1914

The new Patterson Garage and Machine Co. at the corner of Second Street and North El Circulo is now in business. The superb building was constructed by T.W. Patterson before his death. It is being operated by P.C. Gartley, formerly of San Francisco.

The reorganization of Patterson’s brass band is proceeding well, with 14 members having signed up.

The walls of the new high school building are now going up.

A two-day carnival, complete with a Ferris wheel and merry-go-round, will be in Patterson next week.

Professor W.J. Connell will return for a second year as high school principal.
