Once the doors flung open, rows of seats were filled with proud family and community members, eager to see the girls and boys dance. It was this positive and loving crowd that set the mood, laying down a warm foundation that welcomed the dancers once they took the stage. Among the group of enthusiasts was recital director Kelly Souza who has been teaching dance for 11 years.
According to Souza, Trinity Dance Center’s goal is “to share our love of dance with kids in the community,” as well as create a positive and fun atmosphere for students in order to further pursue an education in dance.
With a roster of over a dozen pupils, Souza’s outreach efforts have been successful.
Once the clock struck seven, the waiting was over. A video presentation kicked off the evening and the crowd knew it was show time. The curtains were drawn back to expose a big plush white backdrop filling the stage with various multi-colored segments.
The evening’s dance routines started with a grand presentation of the entire Trinity Dance Center dancers. Girls and boys of all ages took turns filling the stage during the high tempo routine named “Count Your Rainbows”.
Each group took turns showing off their moves and sharing the limelight by moving on and off the stage. The end of the routine was capped off by having all the dancers populate the stage and dance as one unit.
The routine kicked off an evening that would exhibit a variety of routines composed by instructors Kelly Souza, Vanessa Pimentel, Brittney Kuhn, Katie Schwab, and Arielle Dodd.
The recital in total had 42 routines that featured a wide variety of stylistic influences from hip hop to ballet to jazz and lyrical style dances.
None was perhaps more powerful and artistic than the performance “Torches,” choreographed by Kelly Souza.
The dance was a contemporary piece that fused the styling of ballet and lyrical dance. The dance started with the stage completely dark.
Then, one by one, torches were carried onto the stage, creating a powerful and ominous mood. The stage lighting stayed off as the routine started. This created a unique effect as the dancers Madeline Freres, Jordyn Larson, Logan Larson, Shaniya Martin, Chesney Oleson, Eliana Purcell, Mikaela Purcell, and Melissa Tenorio looked like they were silhouettes dancing on stage.
This was a great display of artistry as the dancers moved gracefully around the stage, taking a break from the faster paced routines that went before it.
This shift in tempo mixed with powerful artistry put everyone in the crowd into an at ease trance, remaining quiet and pensive as the routine progressed. Souza said the artistic inspiration came from listening to the lyrics of the song and “Seeing people for who they are on the inside rather than what they look like on the outside.”
With this season of dance coming to an end for the Trinity Dance Center, the dancers will now take a break before registration begins again in August.
