‘Man of La Mancha’ in Modesto

DETAILS: Modesto Performing Arts will open its 47th summer season with the musical ‘Man of La Mancha’. It is the story of the adventures of Don Quixote and his sidekick Sancho Panza. Miguel Cervantes, aging and a failure as a playwright, poet and tax collector for the government, has been thrown in the dungeon in Seville and is awaiting trial by the Inquisition for an offense against the church. He has his unfinished novel “Don Quixote” with him and offers a defense in the form of entertainment by acting out the novel before the court.

Westley-El Solyo Fire Department dinner-dance
WHEN: 7 p.m.; takeout available from 7 to 9 p.m.; dancing from 9 p.m. to midnight
WHERE: El Solyo Firehouse, 3926 River Road, in Vernalis
DETAILS: The Westley-El Solyo Fire Department will host its 32nd annual barbecued tri-tip dinner, followed by dancing to the music of the band Home Town. Tickets can be bought at the door or in advance from any firefighter.

Comforting Kids Car Show
WHEN: Registration for cars featured in the show opens at 9 a.m.
WHERE: Pioneer Park, 1250 Tulare St., Newman
DETAILS: The sixth annual nonprofit Comforting Kids Car Show will feature a disc jockey, vendors, food, donation drawings and awards. Comforting Kids, consisting of many West Side residents, raises money all year round to deliver gifts at Christmas-time to children hospitalized with long-term illnesses.
COST: Admission is free to the public; $35 to show a car or $30 in advance. Ticket includes a dash plaque and event T-shirt.

Church Basement Ladies are on stage
WHEN: July 11 through July 27; Friday and Saturday performances are at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m.
WHERE: Westside Theatre, 1331 Main St., Newman
DETAILS: Church Basement Ladies can be likened to the main valve of any town’s pipeline because the ladies know the score about all the folks like watching goldfish in a bowl.
Dishing up the goods with fast-paced comedic chops, the actors keep the audience rolling in their seats. The Church Basement Ladies celebrates the finely tuned kitchen team at the East Cornucopia Lutheran Church of the Prairie. They can handle whatever comes their way. Linda Garrett directs the play.
COST: General Admission is $15, Reserved Section $18. The show is rated PG (suitable for ages 12 and up). Students are admitted for half price.
