Irene Mildred Townsend

June 5, 1927 – July 9, 2014

Irene Mildred Townsend, 87, of Patterson, passed away Wednesday, July 9 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

Irene was born to Peter and Tilda Vollan in rural western Minnesota and grew up in a Norwegian farming community surrounded by family. She graduated from Dawson High

School and went on to graduate from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN in 1948 with a degree in Home Economics. She taught high school for several years and then married

James Townsend of Minneapolis in 1952. Later she worked for the Hennepin County Highway department in Hopkins, MN. She trained and then served as her husband’s dialysis technician. In 1980 Irene and Jim ventured out on a search for a new home, finding Patterson in April of that year. This became their home where they made many wonderful friends. Irene worked as an educational assistant for Patterson Unified School District, Chatom and Modesto School Districts, and the Berean School in Patterson. She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and “Women of Life”. Irene was completely devoted to her husband and family, always putting them first. She lived her life to serve God, family, friends and all others. Our world needs more

people like her. She will be greatly missed.

Irene Townsend is survived by her son Timothy Townsend(wife Kari) of Turlock; daughter Beverly Ferriere(husband Jim) of St. Paul, MN; grandchildren: Toby Townsend, Christopher Ferriere, Simon Ferriere, Ella Townsend, Cade Townsend; great-grandchildren: Lana an Anya Ferriere. She was preceded in death by her husband

James Townsend.

A Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Patterson. Interment will follow

at Patterson District Cemetery.
