Patterson High honored its standout spring athletes on Monday at its Spring Athletic Awards Banquet inside the school’s gymnasium.
Though many athletes received awards, two — Ronyea Ellington and Rebecca Hinojos — stole the show.
Ellington, Patterson’s Senior Male Athlete of the Year, and Hinojos, Patterson’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year, earned lifetime passes, good at any Tigers home sporting event.
Ellington earned the honor by anchoring the football and boys track and field teams. He was also a steady contributor to the boys basketball team.
Hinojos, also a three-sport athlete, excelled in volleyball, girls basketball and softball.
“Both are exemplary athletes and deserve their awards,” Patterson athletic director Dave Klein said.
It was an evening to honor many Tiger standouts.
Patterson baseball coach Benji Lozano named senior David Gonsalves the team’s Most Valuable Player. Junior Tyler Bettencourt earned Outstanding Offensive Player honors, and Alex Casias came away with the Outstanding Defensive Player award.
Freshman Frankie Sanchez took the Coach’s Award.
Senior Mandy Sifuentes was named the softball team’s MVP. Kianna Weinzheimer took home the Outstanding Offensive Player award, while teammate Samantha Kramer earned the Outstanding Defensive Player award.
Seniors Leslie Scheuber and Kayla Souza came away with the Tiger Pride Award and the Coach’s Award, respectively.
Sifuentes also earned the Western Athletic Conference’s Most Valuable Player honor. Kramer also bolstered her evening, capturing the WAC’s Most Valuable Defensive Player honor.
Tigers track and field coach Shellie Freres spoke about her team’s ongoing campaign.
She named Emmanuel Brooks and Amber Bond her Most Valuable Athletes.
“I don’t think anyone was surprised to learn that (Bond) won the award,” Freres said. “The boys competition was a little bit closer.”
Krissy Deblar earned the track team’s Tiger Pride Award. Teammates Gisela Guzman and Krystal Stubbs took home Coach’s Awards.
On the boys side, Imani Brown earned the Tiger Pride Award. Teammates Raphael Martinez, Jelani Brown and Adrian Laurel received Coach’s Awards.
Patterson girls soccer coach Cade Tomasegovich named junior Jessica Herrera the team’s MVP. Anayl Diaz came away with the Outstanding Offensive Player award, and teammate Genesis Barraza took the Outstanding Defensive Player award.
Senior Jessica Carranza earned Tiger Pride honors.
Five Tigers — Herrera, Barraza, Diaz, Rosario Cabellero and Yesica Cantero — earned spots on the WAC’s All-League team.
“This was a great team, and I look forward to seeing most of the girls back again next season,” Tomasegovich said.
Patterson boys golf coach Jason Oliveira named freshman Alex Whitney the team’s Most Outstanding Golfer.
Jacob Jordan earned the Most Improved Golfer award. Chris Hohl took the Coach’s Award, and teammate Jonathan Jordan came away with the Tiger Pride Award.
Patterson’s Javier Lagarde was named the tennis team’s Most Valuable Male Player. Paola Hernandez earned Most Valuable Female Player honors.
Sharon Lizotte took the Tiger Pride Award, and Victor Jimenez was the team’s Most Improved Player.
Patterson coach Lew Boyle named Kyle VanRiper MVP of the boys swim team. Brenda VanRiper earned MVP honors for the girls swim team.
Helio Tejada, Garrett Murray, Jasmin Brundke and Bethany Sonnefeld each came away with Most Improved Swimmer honors.
“It was another great year for Patterson High athletics,” Klein said.
