More than $193,000 in scholarships and awards were presented at the Patterson High School awards night May 26.
Three Patterson High grads — Zachary Obeid, Darlene Ruiz and Chelsea Taylor — topped the class by earning Dell Scholar awards of $20,000 each over a six-year period. They were among the 106 California scholars named to program by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. Among the qualifications to become a Dell Scholar are community involvement and a high grade-point average.
Taylor also received a $20,000 Gates Millennium Scholarship from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Students who are awarded the scholarship must have high academic and leadership qualities, among other criteria.
Obeid, 19, is the son of Mohamed and Lutfah Obeid. He is in the Advancement Via Individual Determination classes at the high school, where he also played varsity football and was on the varsity track and field team for two years. Obeid was also a member of the Kids Helping Kids group and Academic Block P. He plans to attend California State University, Stanislaus, and major in business with a concentration in marketing.
Ruiz, 17, is the daughter of Salvador and Silvia Ruiz. She was in the Mexican American Student Association, Hispanic Youth Leadership Council, Kids Helping Kids group and California Scholarship Federation. Her awards include the Academic Block P Award, Scholar of the Week, PRIDE scholarships and an AVID scholarship. Ruiz plans to attend the University of California, Davis, and major in biotechnology to be a pharmacist.
Taylor, daughter of Carmen Taylor and Harry Taylor and stepdaughter of Jay Endersbe, is 17 years old. She has received the California Golden State Seal Merit Award, PRIDE scholar awards and University of California Dean Scholar Award. She is in the West Side Democratic Club and is in competition dance. At Patterson High, Taylor has been in volleyball and the California Scholarship Federation. Taylor plans to attend the University of Southern California and major in biological sciences and communications. She wants to become a doctor and specialize in oncology.
Gerardo Cortez, son of Jose and Nati Cortez, received an academic scholarship from Santa Clara University totaling $28,600. He has been a Patterson High scholar-athlete for four years and scholar-athlete of the year when he was a senior. Cortez played varsity soccer for four years and has been a member of the Ceres Earthquakes competitive soccer club for six years. Cortez would like to play professional soccer or be a sports psychologist. He was a member of the Academic Block P for all four years and received PRIDE awards for all his high school years.
