Turnovers doomed the Patterson Ravens varsity youth football team in a 21-14 loss to the host Ripon Knights on Saturday, Sept. 12.
The Ravens led 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter, but Ripon converted two late fumbles into a pair of touchdowns to pull away down the stretch.
“We played a solid game for the most part,” Ravens coach Keith Parker said. “But the turnovers hurt us and ended up costing us the game.”
Parker was especially pleased with the performance of his offensive line. He said linemen Darius Hunt, Juan Galvez, Frank Franz, Broderick Parker, Sal Becerra and Damon Taylor played their best game of the season.
“The line played as good as they have all year,” Parker said. “They controlled the line of scrimmage.”
Patterson quarterback Jonathan Perez threw for 200 yards and a touchdown. Teammate Brandon Williams added 160 yards receiving and a touchdown.
The junior varsity Ravens jumped on Ripon early en route to a 34-7 victory.
“We played well from the get-go,” Ravens coach Read Weinzheimer said.
Hunter Powers, Michael Lawson and Ruben Rosas each had a touchdown for the Ravens. But the story of the game was kicker Chase Mullin, who converted the team’s first point-after kick of the season.
“In our league, a (point after) kick is worth two points,” Weinzheimer said. “(Mullin) sent it through the uprights.”
The Ravens won their second straight since dropping a game to Hughson two weeks ago.
“That one loss has spurred us on,” Weinzheimer said. “I don’t expect us to be looking back for the rest of the season.”
