Patterson and West Stanislaus Fire officials are urging the safe use of fireworks this Fourth of July with a list of safety dos and don’ts — and suggestions about where to find legal fireworks around town.

With no public display of professional fireworks happening in Patterson this Independence Day, many will give their own, smaller shows of bright, popping fireballs on neighborhood streets and in public areas. Those who are caught with illegal fireworks, however — described as dangerous because they explode and go up in the air — will face hefty fines and possible jail time if caught, according to the Stanislaus County Fireworks Safety Task Force.

Local groups will raise money by selling legal fireworks at 19 booths scattered around Patterson and surrounding areas. Patterson Fire Division Chief Steve Hall says the booths can remain open until noon July 6, though each group sets its own open hours.

The following tips can help revelers stay safe while celebrating the Fourth.

• Use only “safe-and-sane” fireworks approved by the state fire marshal.

• Always have an adult present when fireworks are lit. Parents and guardians are liable for injuries caused by children’s use of fireworks.

• Always read directions before lighting any firework.

• Use fireworks only outdoors, never inside a house or garage.

• Never light fireworks near dry grass or other flammable materials.

• Light fireworks one at a time.

• Keep a safe distance from bystanders.

• Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

• Always have a bucket of water or garden hose nearby when lighting fireworks.

• Fireworks should never be carried in pockets.

• Never attempt to re-light or “fix” fireworks if they go out or appear to be duds.

I can tell you that illegal fireworks are strictly enforced in this town. Do you have any idea how hard it is to catch them in the act though. Driving around neighborhoods trying to pinpoint where they are coming from is very difficult! Then on top of that they have to catch them in the act. Police and Fire are stretched to the limits and there isn't any money to bring extra personnel in on overtime. Unless an eyewitness calls 911 to turn them in... very unlikely they will be caught. Someone has to actually be able to see that they have illegal fireworks or see them using them. This was however a MUCH quieter year in Patterson than in the past. I will be curious to see those numbers as well - I am sure they will be out next week.

I was in Modesto on the 4th of July and I could see illegal fireworks everywhere in the sky. It wasn't only a Patterson problem. I'm sure illegal fireworks were flying all across the United States.... Perhaps, it's the "American Way"?

Now that the 4th has come and gone, I am wondering if we can get number from the police and fire departments as to how many people were busted for illegal fireworks within Patterson.

As I observed last night, there were a whole lot of illegal fireworks within the city limits. So many, that one of my friends commented that maybe they just aren't enforcing that here in town. I suggested that maybe, since it was the night shift, there was only a limited force on duty and they were stretched to their limits.
